William Martens held the position of Associate Professor at the University of Aizu (1999–2003) and then again at McGill University (2003–2008), where he served as Sound Recording Area Chair for the Schulich School of Music. In 2009 he joined the Faculty of Architecture, Design and Planning at The University of Sydney, where he served as Associate Dean (Graduate Research Studies) and Head of Discipline (Architectural Science). From 2019, he has held the positions of Honorary Associate Professor in the Faculty of Science and Engineering at Macquarie University. From September 2021, he has held the position of Senior Research Scientist at the National Acoustic Laboratories.

B.A. in Psychology (honours) from Miami University, Oxford, OH, in 1978; Ph.D. in Psychology from Northwestern University, Evanston, IL, in 1991.
